Genetic Counseling in Gynecologic Oncology: What Advanced Practitioners Need to Know

Saturday, March 11, 2017
6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

The Society for Gynecologic Oncology (SGO), the Advanced Practitioner Society for Hematology and Oncology (APSHO) and Harborside Medical Education invite allied health practitioners in the subspecialty of gynecologic oncology to a dinner symposium during SGO’s Annual Meeting on Women’s Cancer. This course is geared towards Advanced Practitioners (APs) such as nurse practitioners, physician assistants, clinical pharmacists, and clinical nurse specialists.

Allied heath attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the role of genetic testing and counseling in the oncology setting, be better equipped to make appropriate recommendations for counseling and have the tools to communicate effectively to patients. After attending this course, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate increased understanding of the role genetic testing and counseling play in the oncology setting
  • Discuss the difference in germline and somatic gene mutation and make appropriate recommendations for counseling
  • Identify appropriate key points in the patient/family history for genetic counseling referral and/or genetic testing
  • Discuss the various patient communication tools to convey pertinent information on genetic testing and counseling

Content from this meeting will be published in the Journal of the Advanced Practitioner in Oncology, the official publication of APSHO, in November/December 2017. This activity is supported by AstraZeneca. Content and CME will be provided by SGO.
