Society of Gynecologic Oncologists Changes Name to Society of Gynecologic Oncology
(April 4, 2012) –The Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) announced a major restructuring during the group’s 43rd Annual Meeting on Women’s Cancer® that was held March 24-27, 2012, in Austin, TX.
Membership approved the restructure, which incorporates a 501(c)(6) not-for-profit entity with the enhanced, current 501 (c)3 philanthropic organization. A single governing board/council will oversee both organizations.
The newly created 501(c)(3), to be known as the Foundation for Gynecologic Oncology, will be responsible for education, research, development and fundraising to complete the missions of both groups. The Society of Gynecologic Oncology, the assumed 501(c)(6), will be responsible for clinical practice, government relations, coding and membership activites.
According to the newly elected SGO President Ronald D. Alvarez, MD, “This move solidifies SGO as a strong and viable organization that is becoming more independent of pharmaceutical and medical device industry funding to support our member education.” He notes this is a very similar reorganizational move made recently by other groups, including by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).
