A Message from SGO President Matthew A. Powell, MD

Every generation of gynecologic oncologists inherits a specialty shaped by the people who came before it.

The breakthroughs we build upon, the standards of care we follow, the mentors who guide us, and the community we rely on all exist because previous generations asked difficult questions, challenged convention, and imagined a better future for the patients we serve.

Now, it’s our turn.

The field of gynecologic oncology is evolving at an extraordinary pace. Scientific discoveries are accelerating. Technologies such as artificial intelligence are reshaping how we learn, research, and deliver care. New therapies continue to improve outcomes, multidisciplinary collaboration is expanding, and our understanding of gynecologic cancers grows stronger every day.

The future isn’t something that’s simply waiting for us.

It’s something we’re creating together.

That idea became the inspiration for the theme of the 2027 SGO Annual Meeting on Gynecologic Cancer:

Defining the Next Era

To me, this theme reflects both an opportunity and a responsibility.

The next era of gynecologic oncology won’t be defined by one discovery, one institution, or one individual. It will be defined by a community of physicians, researchers, advanced practice providers, scientists, trainees, educators, and partners who are committed to pushing our specialty forward together.

Each Annual Meeting represents an important milestone in that journey.

It is where new research is introduced, ideas are challenged, collaborations begin, future leaders emerge, and innovations move closer to improving the lives of patients. It is where we gather not only to learn from one another, but to help shape what comes next.

That spirit will be reflected throughout next year’s Annual Meeting.

Together with Program Chairs Drs. R. Wendel Naumann, Ritu Salani, and Premal Thaker, we are building a scientific program designed to showcase groundbreaking research, foster meaningful collaboration, encourage thoughtful discussion, and inspire new ways of thinking about the future of patient care.

Building that future begins now. If you’re advancing research, developing new approaches to care, or generating insights that can move our specialty forward, I encourage you to share your work with the SGO community. Abstract, surgical film, trial in progress, and late-breaking abstract shell submissions are now open through September 18. Your work could help shape the conversations, discoveries, and innovations that define the next era of gynecologic oncology.

But defining the next era extends beyond the podium. Whether you’re presenting your latest research, learning from colleagues, discovering emerging innovations, strengthening professional relationships, mentoring the next generation, or exploring new approaches to patient care, every attendee brings a unique perspective that helps shape our specialty.

Because defining the next era isn’t the responsibility of a select few. It belongs to all of us.

From March 19–22, 2027, we’ll come together in Phoenix, Arizona to exchange ideas, share discoveries, strengthen our community, and continue advancing the science and care that improve the lives of women with gynecologic cancers.

I hope you’ll join us as we write the next chapter of our specialty together.

I look forward to defining the next era with you in Phoenix.
