Introducing SGO President Angeles Alvarez Secord, MD, MHSc

Angeles Alvarez Secord, MD, MHSc, is a professor in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Duke University Heath System. She received her undergraduate degree with honors from Carroll College in Helena, Montana and graduated AOA with honors from the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Secord completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology and her fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. Upon completing her fellowship in 2001, she joined the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Duke. Dr. Secord has been an active member of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) since 2001 serving initially on the SGO Fellow’s Task Force and later the Chair of the Candidate’s Task Force. She was inspired to serve SGO further during her role as an Ex-Officio member on the SGO Council from 2003 to 2005 crediting that experience for opening the door to future leadership possibilities. Dr. Secord has participated on several SGO and Foundation for Women’s Cancer (FWC) committees, task force initiatives and program committees.

She is currently Director of Gynecologic Oncology Clinical Trials, Associate Director of Clinical Research, Gynecology Oncology, and one of the Principal Investigators for NRG Oncology at the Duke Cancer Institute. Dr. Secord has also served as a board member for other professional organizations including GOG Foundation and American Association of Gynecology and Obstetrics Foundation (AAOGF). She is passionate about mentoring the next generation of investigators and serves as the AAOGF Scholar Committee Chair, NRG Oncology New Investigator Committee Vice-Chair and the GOG Foundation Education and Mentoring Co-Chair. Dr. Secord is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and an active member of American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Gynecological & Obstetrical Society, and International Gynecologic Cancer Society as well as other professional organizations. Her experience with these associations inspired the SGO/FWC theme for the year, “The Power of Shared Purpose: Transforming Gynecologic Cancer Care” and represents the goal to maximally leverage opportunities for synergistic collaboration to further our collective missions and vision where everyone has the power to impact, prevent, overcome, and eradicate gynecologic cancer.
