Creighton L. Edwards, MD, FACOG

The Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) mourns the loss of Creighton L. Edwards, MD, FACOG, a long-time member of the Society and a pioneering figure in the field of gynecologic oncology. Dr. Edwards’ remarkable career spanned more than six decades, during which he helped shape the specialty and influenced generations of clinicians, researchers, and trainees.

Dr. Edwards served as Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and held the Raymond H. Kaufman, M.D. and Patricia Ann Kaufman Endowed Chair at Baylor College of Medicine. A respected clinician and educator, he was also affiliated with leading institutions in Houston, including Texas Children’s Hospital and Houston Methodist, and contributed extensively to research through his work with the Dan L. Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Dr. Edwards played an essential role in establishing the Society’s mission and advancing the care of women with gynecologic cancers. His work in clinical research, particularly in advanced gynecologic malignancies, helped expand treatment options and improve outcomes for patients facing complex diagnoses.

In addition to his clinical and research contributions, Dr. Edwards was deeply committed to compassionate care. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) District XI established the Creighton L. Edwards, MD Award in Compassionate Care in his honor, recognizing residents who demonstrate exceptional empathy and respect for patients—qualities that defined his career.

He was also a co-author of the Gynecologic Oncology Handbook: An Evidence-Based Clinical Guide, a resource that continues to support clinicians in delivering high-quality care.

Larry Copeland, MD, Physician and Professor at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, reflects, “Creighton Edwards was a master clinician and surgeon and mentor to many trainees, including myself. He was humble and altruistic in his approach to both patient care and teaching. He had a positive impact on the career of many gynecologic oncologists.”

Dr. Edwards’ legacy is reflected not only in his many professional accomplishments, but in the countless lives he touched through his mentorship, leadership, and dedication to patient care. His contributions to SGO and the field of gynecologic oncology will have a lasting impact.

At this time, there are no further details to provide. SGO extends its deepest condolences to Dr. Edwards’ family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
