SGO advocates for increased federal investment during 2026 virtual Capitol Hill meetings

News Article
Feb 26, 2026

On Feb. 24-25, more than 20 SGO congressional ambassadors and member constituents met virtually with federal lawmakers and staff as part of SGO’s 2026 Virtual Capitol Hill advocacy meetings. Additional meetings are scheduled for March 3-4, with a broader update to follow.

During the first round of meetings, SGO members connected with key House and Senate appropriations leaders, including the offices of Katie Britt, R-Ala., Troy Carter, R-Texas, and Robert Aderholt, R-Ala., to reinforce the importance of sustained federal funding for gynecologic cancer research, prevention, screening and care delivery.

2026 advocacy priorities

Discussions focused on several key fiscal year 2027 requests:

  • Establishing a separate line item for endometrial cancer within the Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs funded at $10 million
  • Appropriating $52.5 million, a $2.5 million increase for the DoD Ovarian Cancer Research Program.
  • Supporting SGO requested FY27 Labor- HHS report language to expand access to HPV self-collection for cervical cancer screening, particularly in underserved communities.

SGO advocates emphasized that targeted investment across the National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Department of Defense research programs is critical to accelerating scientific discovery, improving early detection and expanding access to care.

SGO will continue its advocacy meetings March 3-4 and will provide an additional update following the conclusion of those discussions.
